Are you unsure about which test to take?

The immune system produces antibodies as a defence mechanism. When a patient is confronted with SARS-CoV-2, his or her immune system produces specific antibodies to fight and eliminate it from the body. 

First, a few days after exposure to the virus, IgM antibodies are produced and act as a first line of defence. A few days later, IgG antibodies begin to be produced. These will act as "memory" antibodies in future exposures to the virus, helping the immune system to fight it much more efficiently. 

Once the infection has resolved, IgM antibodies will no longer be detectable, while IgG antibodies will remain detectable for a longer period of time. Therefore, antibody detection tests provide information about the immune status of the patient against the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID19. 

However, to confirm the presence of virus in the upper respiratory tract, a PCR (SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection test) or an antigen detection test should always be chosen.
